    Terrible experience

My fiancé and I chose Camaron Baru after months of planning because we are in a long-distance relationship and have very limited time together. We booked this trip well in advance, spent a significant amount of money, and expected a high-quality, all-inclusive resort experience. Unfortunately, this was one of the most disappointing vacations we have ever taken. We arrived at approximately 1:30 p.m. for check-in and did not get to our room until around 5:00 p.m., which was already frustrating after traveling. The only reason I am giving this resort one star is because the beach and ocean are absolutely beautiful and the location itself is fantastic. Beyond that, the resort did not come close to what I would expect from a property presented as one of the best. The food was mediocre at best, and the drinks were extremely cheap and served in small plastic cups that were left throughout the property and reused. The buffet is outside in the extreme heat and humidity, with birds, raccoons, and even dogs getting into the dining area. The animals are obviously not at fault, but it raises serious questions about why food is being served this way in such a hot environment. The specialty restaurants are also outdoors with no air conditioning and require reservations, meaning that if you arrive without one, your only real option is the buffet. The resort also allows guests from the other property in Boca Grande to come over on day passes, making an already crowded resort even more packed. There was no internet or reliable reception, which is difficult to understand for a resort at this price point. The public bathrooms frequently had no soap and were dirty, the pools were only so-so and had bird droppings in them, and there was generally very little attention to cleanliness or guest comfort. There were a few genuinely kind employees, and I want to acknowledge them, but unfortunately they were the exception rather than the rule. We experienced staff members who were rude and even threw plates onto our table rather than properly serving us. The property itself is also nowhere near the condition I expected. There are no elevators, our tower was extremely far from the main areas, and we were walking approximately 10,000–20,000 steps a day just getting around. Normally that would not bother us, but we specifically told the resort that we were celebrating my birthday, and the staircase we had to use was under construction and in poor condition. Our room had two lights that did not work, and overall the room and property felt worn, humid, beaten down, and far from the quality of a highly rated luxury resort. On top of everything, when we became so unhappy that we decided to leave one day early, we asked if the resort could simply help cover transportation to the other hotel we had arranged. We spoke with approximately three different people, and the response was no. The only solution offered was moving us to another room, despite the fact that we had already repeatedly explained that the overall resort experience was the problem. What made this especially upsetting is that our time together is very limited, this trip required significant planning and expense, and instead of feeling relaxed and cared for, we spent our vacation dealing with disappointment. I am usually very fair in my reviews and make a genuine effort to give businesses the benefit of the doubt, but I cannot recommend this resort based on our experience. The beach is gorgeous, the ocean is beautiful, and the location is undeniably special. Unfortunately, that is where the positives end for us. One star, and that one star is for the ocean and the location.

I’d go back. Now that I know. I liked it. Didn’t love it

The staff is awesome. The check in process beyond sucks. It’s a game of cat and mouse. The staff are overwhelmed as they strictly adhere to the 3 pm check in time (which becomes 4) then masses of people gather to get their keys. So folks get aggressive. Staff starts ignoring and picking people. It’s mayhem. Once keys in hand though. It’s a good (almost great) resort. The AC in room would turn off by itself. The room needed a little attention. But again. The staff was superb. The pools immaculate. Weird that you can’t get towels at beach

Do NOT prepay this hotel — Royal Decameron Baru fully refundable policy is a bait and switch

I booked a fully refundable reservation for a stay four months out and prepaid at booking. Within 48 hours, I decided to cancel — well within the refundable window, exactly as advertised. That's when the nightmare started. Instead of a refund, I was told I'd be issued a "voucher" — something never disclosed at booking. When I pushed back, I was bounced between multiple phone numbers, none of which could actually resolve anything. Finally I was told I had to fill out a separate cancellation form, which they emailed me, that I then had to print, sign, and scan back — and then wait 30 days for "approval." For a refund I was already contractually owed. I've now spent two full days on this, including extended hold time with a "manager" who still hasn't resolved it. This isn't customer service, it's a deliberate obstacle course designed to make people give up and accept a voucher instead of their money back. If a Decameron property offers a "fully refundable" rate, understand that in practice it may mean anything but. Book elsewhere, or at minimum, do not prepay.
