Ocean El Faro – Overall 7/10
We’ve just finished our stay at Ocean El Faro and overall I’d give it a 7/10. We had a good holiday and there are plenty of things the hotel does really well, but there are also a few areas that could definitely be improved. Room & Swim-Up We stayed in swim-up room 9120 with Privilege. The room itself was really nice, clean and quiet at night. The bed was very comfortable with loads of pillows, and the air-con was excellent. In fact, the air-con was really good in all the enclosed areas around the resort. The swim-up was lovely and kept really clean. Having your room key built into your wristband is also brilliant, especially when you’re constantly in and out of the pool. A couple of negatives with the room: the shower leaked water out into the room, although the shower itself was good, and the door out to the swim-up was an absolute nightmare to open and close because it was so stiff. We also couldn’t find any English-language channels on the TV. Housekeeping was really good, the room was cleaned daily and the minibar was well stocked/replenished. Arrival & Privilege – 7/10 Check-in wasn’t the best start. There was quite a bit of waiting around for our butler, and our bags took around an hour to arrive at the room. This could have just been an isolated issue on the day we arrived, though. Privilege came included with our swim-up room. You get separate seating inside the buffet, additional food at The Lighthouse and premium drinks at the bars. We’d probably recommend Privilege if you can get a good deal on it, but I wouldn’t pay a massive premium specifically for it. We didn’t really see much value in the butler service apart from them being useful for booking our restaurant reservations. Restaurants & Food Sakura – 8/10 This was our first night and a really good start. The food was brilliant and the show was good. Really enjoyable experience. Steakhouse – 8.5/10 Really nice vibe, attentive waiters and really nice food. There were things that could have been slightly better, but overall one of the stronger restaurants. Mexican I really enjoyed this one, although my partner didn’t rate her food as highly. That could simply have been down to what she chose. The restaurant itself was really nice and themed well. Route 66 – 2/10 Unfortunately, this was absolutely shocking and easily the worst restaurant we tried. A lot of the food seemed fried and ready to go rather than freshly prepared, and everything was incredibly rushed. We had waiters bringing more food out while we were still eating what was already on the table. The staff on our visit also came across like they simply didn’t want to be there. Wouldn’t recommend it based on our experience. Italian – 4/10 During our stay the Italian had been moved into the Steakhouse, just serving Italian food instead. The food itself wasn’t terrible, but it honestly felt like something you could have got from the buffet rather than an à la carte restaurant. The Lighthouse Breakfast was okay — there was enough there, but nothing particularly special. Dinner/lunch during the day was 9/10, and the evening meal was also 9/10. We had exceptional steak and prawns here. Definitely some of the best food we ate during the holiday. Main Buffet Breakfast was generally really good with plenty of choice. One improvement I’d definitely make is a fresh crepe station. The crepes were already made and tended to be stale rather than being cooked fresh. Dinner/lunch during the day was miles better than tea/evening food and generally really nice. The evening buffet was much more disappointing. They put on different “themed” nights, but it didn’t really seem to change much. It felt like the same options being rotated, and there wasn’t a great deal of choice for kids either. The buffet could probably do with being bigger considering the size of the resort. Another simple improvement would be self-service soft-drink machines. Everything is table service, and sometimes you’re waiting ages just to get a soft drink. Letting people get their own would make things much easier. Ocean Burger – 3/10 Another poor one unfortunately. There were flies around the food, the burgers and hot dogs appeared pre-packed, the hot dogs were stale and the burgers were just about edible. The self-service drinks machine was good, and we only discovered later that there was an ice-cream machine, which was probably the best part of the place when it was actually switched on! Everything seemed to take forever to get going there as well. On one occasion it was supposed to be open but seemed to take around two hours before everything was properly up and running. The 3/10 is mainly for the drinks and ice cream. Pools & Bars The pools were nice and there were plenty of sunbeds for everyone, which was great. One of the large pools closed for repair works during our stay and was still closed when we left, although importantly there was still another large pool available. The pool activities were okay but seemed to be pretty much the same every day, so more variety would be good. There are plenty of bars around the resort and service was pretty spot-on overall. The pool bars could get overwhelmed at busy times, but generally they coped well. Staff throughout the resort were pretty good overall. We did notice that service tended to get even better once the tips started coming out, though! Beach The beach was one of the disappointments for us. There was a lot of seaweed and a strong seaweed smell, so it wasn’t the beautiful Caribbean beach experience we’d hoped for. Onsite Shop – Bring What You Need! The onsite shop is ridiculously expensive, so bring essentials with you if you can. Some examples we came across: * Pepto-Bismol – around $30 * Paracetamol – around $17 * Chocolate bar – around $10 * 500ml bottle of water – around $9 * Lilo/pool float – $45 Definitely bring your own lilo if you’ve got room in your luggage! Resort & Facilities Wi-Fi was pretty good throughout the hotel grounds, which was a nice surprise. The gym has enough equipment to get a solid workout in while you’re away, although if you’re used to lifting heavy, the weights don’t really go heavy enough. The resort is fairly large. It took us around 10 minutes to walk from the bottom of the resort to the lobby, but there are buggies going backwards and forwards throughout the day if you manage to catch one. We can’t really comment on the evening entertainment because we didn’t attend any of it. We’re early birds and were usually burnt out after tea, so we’d head back to the room. Premium Travel Club Presentation One thing I’d advise people to be aware of is being approached about a Premium Travel Club presentation. We felt ill-informed about what we were actually agreeing to attend, and it turned out to be a sales presentation for a long-term holiday membership. I’d recommend asking exactly what the presentation involves before agreeing to it. If that sort of thing isn’t of interest to you, I’d personally give it a miss and enjoy your holiday instead. Would We Return? Probably not, but that’s more because of the location than because Ocean El Faro is a bad hotel. We like being able to walk out of our hotel, explore, go to shops and have other places around us. Here, the resort feels quite isolated, and anything worth doing outside seemed to involve roughly a 20–40 minute drive. If you’re someone who wants to arrive at an all-inclusive and stay within the resort for most of your holiday, that might not bother you at all. There are plenty of facilities, bars and food options to keep you there. For us, we’d choose somewhere a little less isolated next time. Overall: 7/10. We had a good holiday, loved the swim-up room, had some excellent meals and there were plenty of positives. Fixing some of the food consistency, shop pricing, beach/seaweed issues and a few service details would make a big difference.

Great overall experience!
Had a great time. Service was phenomenal and our service attendant for the week was amazing! His name is Alex and he was super attentive and very helpful! He always knew where to find us and made sure we had what we needed. Jonathon at the privilege beach was also really great! Super funny and charasmatic. He made our beach day fun. Justina at the privilege bar was also great! She was so nice with our daughter and made her experience one to remember! As I said the service we had was great! Definitely enjoyed the experience from that aspect. Food was not what we expected overall for an Ocean property, but overall it was a good experience. They were renovating during our stay so some things were not open.

Fantastic stay
We stayed for two weeks. We were concerned after reading some of the reviews. But we had an amazing time. The rooms are spacious and very clean. Maids are lovely. The mini bar was restocked daily. The buffet restaurant, we always found something to eat. We also ate at the steak house, route 66 and the Italian. My husband has a good appetite and there were no problems asking for a bigger portion. All the staff are so friendly. Very patient with my son practicing his Spanish. Franklin was the best. Sorted out all or restaurant bookings and checked in with us every day. Felix the TUI rep was so helpful. No issues finding a sunbed at any time of day. We did one day trip to Samoa island. Fabulous day would definitely recommend. Ruben was a very good tour guide. We throughly enjoyed our holiday and are looking to book again for next year.
